  1. This semester I have enlisted in English Composition 1, this is not only a prerequisite to getting my degree in music education, but it is a huge step for me in my writing career, both in and out of music. I want to get my degree in music education, but I am aspiring musician, and published poet. Though this sounds like a short list of accomplishments, but this is actually a small list of footsteps I have taken to get myself to this point. I am going to use this class to gain more knowledge as far as writing and creative intellect go. In order to meet these goals I will make sure to spend at least 6-10 hours a week outside of class studying what we have and are studying or reviewing in the class, in addition of course I will do each and every assignment we have to the best of my abilities, and also push further to grasp the concept even better. In order to maintain the best information in this class I will make sure to get all the information notated in class while we are working in all aspects, whether we are working in groups individually or as an entire class. When we are working directly on the topic I will make sure to document everything possible and make sure to at the very least keep a copy of any assignment so that I can revisit this topic later in the semester. And as with anything else I will make sure to continue to work on what I learn in this class in the future so that I can stay sharp on the topic and be up-to-date on the topic. I will indefinitely grow in knowledge and creativity from this English Composition class first semester.

    1. Hey Dontay,
I have to say that I admire your admiration for music. I myself have a similar Interest of a career in music. after reading your summery, the only thing I can see that you should consider is making sure you use commas. for example, In this sentence-"whether we are working in groups individually or as an entire class." you want to place commas after "groups" and "individually" to accurately separate the elements in that series. Other then that, I believe you did a really good job.

  2. My goal is to make an A this semsester in ENG121. This is my last ENG class and B isn’t good enough. This is why I will make it a point to use all the skills we will acquire while attending class for the next 10 weeks.
Learning to extract the information need to form a thesis stament can be difficult. Reading and understanding what you are reading comes from being able to analyze what you are reading. Proper annotating is also a skill I am trying to perfect. Coming to class prepared is also important to being successful in class. Applying all these tools sounds easy, but it is my responsibility to apply them. Class is a place to learn and not worry about being wrong, so we all should feel obligated to respect everyone’s time in class. We are all in this class together and we should feel the desire to learn. We have all the resources like our instructor, LBH, writing center, Library, and each other for help. This semester is a huge one for me, if all goes well I can apply to UCCS in the fall. Whatever it take to make an A I will do. Engage in class exercises use the writing center to proof read papers and essays. Apply reading skills from the LBH so I can analyze what I am reading for proper annotating, and above all have fun. Reading assignments are always better when you understand what you are reading. The skills we learn in this class apply to all profession at some point in time. Hopefully I get an A in this class and move on to UCCS so I can start on my BIO classes. Getting an A is stepping stone towards being more competitive for the radiology program. This is my outline to being successful in this class and I am ready to apply it.

    1. Everything you wrote, I completely agree with. It's our responsibilities as students to apply what we learn into effect. It is easier said but lets help each other out. The more we all learn, the better we will all become.

    2. You seem very motivated to do your best this semester and I love that you know exactly what you need to do in order to be successful in the future. We have many of the same ideas and goals! Just a small thought, maybe try giving more of an introductory sentence, then going into your goals. Great job though, you'll do great!

  3. This semester is my second time taking English Composition 1, and I plan on doing much better than I did the first time around. I took and passed this class at CSU-pueblo with a C, but mediocre grades are no longer acceptable to me, especially being a nursing major. I believe that skills learned in this class are very important to the rest of my college career, or even in the outside world. Learning actively is something I never did in the past. I was always the student that kept quiet in class and never used the resources that were provided. So this semester, my primary short term goal is to be a more active learner. I can be a more successful student if I utilize the writing center or even participate more in class. Improving my learning skills will also greatly improve my writing skills, which is also in my list of goals. Everything I learn from here on out will be used to get to ultimate goal of being accepted into the nursing program here at PPCC. These beginning Classes shouldn’t be looked at as prerequisites that you need for your degree, but rather as stepping stones. Their importance is often minimized because the class might not be directly related to the persons major of study. But what I learned after not doing as amazing as I wanted the first time taking this class, I needed skills I should have learned. Instead of analyzing and reflecting on required texts, I would just read them. Not only did I not use my college resources, I wasn’t really aware of them. All of which are exceptional ways to be an active learner as described in the syllabus. I know if I reach this goal, along with other ones, I will most definitely be successful in this class and many others to come. 

  4. This is my second time taking English Composition 1 at PPCC. Although I didn’t get an “F” the first time, I did not pass with a “C” or better. To change my grade this semester I plan on following the rubric a bit closer than I did last semester. I never really looked at the sheets when I was handed them for each essay or summary that was assigned to the class. To change that, I’ll have to be more aware of what is needed from me on each paper is and how the rubric is laid out for me to do my absolute best in this class. Even though the task is easy enough, I will struggle. This leads to my wild tangents during papers.
Another lesson I learned from last semester is that, corrections do need to be made in the papers I have wrote and to somewhat change my style of writing. Last semester I drifted off into tangents not pressed to the paper at hand. To change that, I’ll have to pay more attention to my writing to stay on course and to the point. That always won’t be easy, especially if it’s a topic that I connect with. With that being said, I will do my best in this class to watch my mistakes and to correct them so I don’t have to repeat a third time.

  5. ENG 121 Diagnostic Paper

My main goal for this class is to pass it so that I can take other classes that require this one. To reach this goal I will work towards the following objectives:

    Use Appropriate Conventions

I currently don’t know many conventions to use in writing so I am hoping to learn some new ones and to use the ones I already know with more skill.

    Communicate with Clarity and Originality

I find it hard sometimes to get my idea across in speech and writing. I always try to make sure that I go over my texts several times, and sometimes get others to look at it to make sure it is as good as I can make it. I have rarely tried to write to a specific audience before now so it will be interesting to see how different it is from what I have done in the past. I personally fail to see a large social aspect to the writing process. It just doesn’t seem to exist and while some people might go and search for it, it doesn’t seem to be a natural part of the process. There is a social part after the process is complete but there doesn’t seem to be one during the writing process. However an easily seen collaborative part of the writing process might be asking friends, family and other people you know about what they think of your text at this point and possibly taking their suggestions. There is also some final changes to be made to texts before they are published, based sometimes on what the public needs for it to be popular if it is going to be sold. I am going to try to come up with a personalized process to help me create texts and communicate clearly within them.

    1. I agree with you that communicating with clarity and originality are important. I often struggle in my writing when I have to imagine things or come up with something original because for me, every thing is like math, it has to add up. But, I also think your plan to open up is a great idea Jack and I wish you the best!

  6. My goal for this English class is to learn to communicate my thoughts better and in a more organized manner so people can better understand me. I would also like to become a better writer in the process of the class. The objectives I think would be the most help or I would use most often, are learning actively and communicating with clarity and originality.

Learning actively has always been a part of my schooling. The skills of reading, annotating, analyzing, questioning and reflecting on the book or article or magazine is very important for comprehension or what you just read. I also like to highlight and write questions out to the side, so if have time to ask for clarification. I plan on using the LEC, writing center, and library for any help I couldn’t get in the classroom. I think this class and learning actively will help me to better understand how to analyze text. Using all of these skills at once will help me also to organize my thoughts.

Communication has always been hard for me. To break the content down to communicate with clarity, originality, and organized information would help me the most. I will achieve this by reading my papers out loud to myself, having peers reading, editing, and giving me feedback on what I could work on, and what is not clean. I also would like to come up with a prewriting process that incorporates all the writing strategies, and so I can get all my thought out, and start organizing them. I also think it would help if I started drafting multiple versions of the same paper so that in each draft the paper gets better and better, other than starting over when it sounds bad. I Also want to get better at appealing the audience.

  7. While in my English 121-105 class there are many short-term goals I plan to accomplish, but my main goal is to get straight A’s this semester for ALL of my summer classes. While going through my syllabus for this class I found two objectives in particular that I felt could improve my writing skills and would also help me throughout my future career. Learning actively-(“…is a personal, interactive process that results in greater expertise, and a more comprehensive understanding of the world”.[PPCC English 121-105 Syllabus]). I plan to interpret this into my success this semester by simply opening up and making friends. I believe being in touch with the people can get you in touch with a part of society that you may have never known. This is an outstanding part of my future that I realize cannot be accomplished without the skill of active learning. The second objective in this course syllabus that really stood out for me was describing a good writer as thinking both critically, AND creatively. (“Reason and imagination are fundamental to problem solving and critical examination of ideas”. [PPCC English 121-105 Syllabus]). I have always had reason through my childhood, as well as adulthood. But, I have always lacked imagination. Some of my favorite stories are fantasies. And, although things typically add up; there are still some things that can’t be explained! I feel that if I can embrace these facts then nothing can stop me!

  8. In my pursuit for a degree in associates of applied science, English composition 1 just happens to be a prerequisite that I need in order to attain it. While in this class, I’m going to take full advantage of the opportunity I have and accomplish my primary goal of strengthening my ability to express my through creative writing. In order to do that, I have set three objectives for myself to help me reach my goal. My first objective is to always provide legitimate information in an organized yet abstract manner keeping the integrity in my work and the reader’s interest the entire time. Another objective is to give my audience a solid understanding of my argument or opinion from my personal point of view. My last objective is to better be able to provide an equal focus on my audience, my opinions, and the clarity of my overall message in my writing. I’m really looking forward to learning everything I can of what this class has to offer.

  9. It is a shame to say but so far this is my second semester in taking English 121. And I hope it’s my last. The last time I took it, I received a low grade, C+, even though it had a plus sign, I didn’t like the C part. I wish it had been a B. For this semester I will try my hardest to achieve a decent grade. I’m not saying an A+, but definitely something better than C+. So for this semester I will try and turn in all my assignments on time; because I always have the tendency to procrastinate until the last minute and I sometimes forget to turn them in. In order to write a good paper I will try and go to the Writing Center for someone to assist me and my writing so I can turn in a better paper. I will also need to be aware of deadlines and the guidelines on which it will be graded on. In order to be a successful student I need to be a more active student and participate more often than what I normally would. Sometimes I have a difficulty in understanding and am too scared to ask for help because I think the others will laugh at what I say. Therefore asking questions when I don’t understand will be a challenge for me. If I do these things I will be a successful student.
