Directions: think about the semester so far. Think about writing the summary and paraphrase and the paper you just wrote. Answer the following two questions:
1. What one aspect of the class do you think helped you the most?
2. What is one thing you wish you knew more about (what would help you with your next few papers?)?
Keep your response to 200 words or less. You can put your response in list form or in paragraph form. Make sure that you really think about your answers. Let me help to make your semester more meaningful to you. Due before class on Wednesday, June 18th.
Response to a classmate (only one): Ask your classmate a question that you think will help to explain his/her answer better. Due by Sunday, June 22nd, by 5pm.
This semester in ENG 121 has been very meaningful so far. I learned the difference between a summary and a paraphrase, which will be helpful in my future classes. Knowing how to get the gist and the main idea of a text is something I will have to do for the rest of my college career. When writing papers, it’s important to summarize and paraphrase to write good papers, and more importantly to avoid plagiarism. One thing I need to work on is citing my sources. That was something that I didn’t fully understand while writing my summary. I also learned while writing my short argument that I need to work on organizing my writing. I tend to have many different ideas in one paragraph. Other than that, I think this semester is going well, and I will continue to learn more skills. I hope my writing continues to improve this summer so I can use my new skills and be prepared for other classes in the future.
ReplyDeleteI think that the “The Little, Brown Handbook” has been one of the most helpful things. It has been very useful with the different types of writing, and grammar issues. Also it has been fairly easy to find subjects when I’m looking for something in particular.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like some of the larger amounts of reading come on Monday and need to be done by Wednesday. It would be much less stressful and I would have more time to work on the papers if the bigger reading assignments would come as homework on Wednesday.
Do you think the reading is to long in general or should judt be spread out more evenly?
DeleteSo far, all the in class learning we do has helped me grasp a better understanding of the assignments. Actually being able to have face to face class discussions and individual assistance if needed is the best way I believe I learn.
ReplyDeleteI would probably have to say that I agree with Jack about the reading homework. With a little more time to read and not cram words through your eyes comes a better understanding of the material after the first read rather then having to re-read the same text 2 or 3 more times.
If we spent more time in class reading assignments would it help with time management?

ReplyDeleteThe process it takes to write a paper has helped when trying to get your point across to support your thesis. All and all the class has been a great deal of help across the board.
ReplyDeleteMore time and going over work cited pages. they can get tricky when your reading an article.
Could you explain, how the writing process help you get your point across?
DeleteYeah, the more you read the more you understand what your reading if we apply the steps it takes in writing a paper.
DeleteI really like the time you take to give us many tools and print outs. I like that the pages are in different formats for people whose brain sees stuff differently. For example the Working thesis paper, was either a word web, or formatted in squares, that helped a lot.
ReplyDeleteI think I need help on coming up with strong thesis statements, and also how to write a good introduction. I like how we had the one on one meeting with you before the paper was due. I also like all the feedback you give on papers so we know exactly what we need to work on and exactly what you want.
